Creating a drift style garden on a huge slope

This small garden had a huge series of level changes and challenges. The garden had a bank of steep lawn that was difficult to even stand up on.  The brief was to create a beautiful attractive garden, awash with interesting features and all year round colour. We also needed to fit in a small shed. As the designer, I felt we should remove the lawn/grass bank and create an oak staircase to act as both a retainer of soil and create access to the new flat area I wanted to create at the top of the garden.  This had been disused due to septic tanks/poor access.  It was a shame as the area afforded super views across the valley.

The garden space was also needed to be screened from the main road; though the client’s righty wanted to maximise sunlight into the space. Before:

Testimonial

"Sam designed a limited budget flower garden for us on a difficult steeply sloping site which called for a fair amount of hard landscaping most of which was done using oak sleepers.
She organised the whole project in such a way that we were able to mix professional and amateur labour in the most cost effective way. The agreed scheme took only a fortnight to execute from start to finish and we are delighted with the outcome. It was an impressive piece of management and a very pleasant and informal experience for us.Without hesitation we would recommend the services of Sam Westcott Garden Design".
